Developing Another Approach In Accessories

So Today was all about my intial ideas and contribution t the group. I had this theme running from the beginning to end of the project of how I wanted to focus on the under-water element to my work. The Illusive and iridescence of sea creatures. Crystal formations, coral and other underwater elements. From my brainstorming research, I acknowledged that the most engaging aspect of underwater for me is reflections and shadows. I then thought to myself I can I play with shadows and reflections onto a body. I started making a few glue samples. I know that when PVA glue dries, it become translucent and the air-bubbles and other shapes reflect straight through when put to light.

I started off by making 3 PVA glue samples, one with green wire tangled through, one with silver wire and one with just glue being criss-crossed through.

 From this, I then started looking into developing them into accessories that reveal a reflection onto the body or the garment. I began to develop my line up for the illusive sea accessory collection.

Exploring Through Honeycomb

My Group started looking into the honeycomb structure, so I decided to incorporate that into my work. First I had a picture of the honeycomb and edited onto Photoshop to see the initial structure, however it ended up looking like a corpse, and seemed extremely relevant to the theme of the bee's so I used the corpse like structure of the honeycomb in my work. I started making samples of these with a simple black plastic. I then started melting parts away to show corrosion and I felt this was a great sample to start photographing on the body for more development.

From these I started developing my final collection for the honeycomb accessory collection. I used Both filled original honeycomb that could be cut with a laser cutter on plastic, whilst the corpse with bendy plastic similar to my sample.

Getting A Taste Of The Industry Feel

Industry Project - Brainstorming Mood Board

For this project we were expected too work in groups of 6-7 and follow a particular designer. During the project brief, the tutors came to the stage to present their chosen designer and convince us to pick them for the next stage. I chose Iris Van Herpen; Iris Van Herpen has crazy exaggerated work, her work is natural forms based and then the natural forms then start to over take the body. Iris Van Herpen is quite funny about her work; she never sells any of her work and only sells 50 copies of her book per year. Iris Van Herpen is quite a literal designer. In the brief we were expected to come up with a collection with everyone's input . The final line up had to be a collaboration of the groups work. There was 5 different areas to cover, production, menswear, womenswear, accessories and textiles. Originally I opted to do womenswear, but as there was ready two other womenswear designers in out group, I decided to continue with accessories instead. I chose accessories because I know that Iris is quite known for her footwear collections and general accessories and I wanted to make my work as relate-able as possible. 

To begin we all started looking through some books in the library about natural forms, I started looking into coral and sea creatures; the illusive and iridescence of the underwater world. However as my team started looking more further out into different areas, I had to also adapt my ideas around theirs. We then started looking at the production side and the casting of models which was a selection of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

From the mood board I then started to draw out some rough designs for the face and neck; the upper body accessories. My designs were influenced mostly by the silhouetted structures. I mostly used prickly designs and the idea of growth on the face. After drawing up the images, I started to think of colour, however, I had come to a realisation that Iris doesnt particularly think of a colour scheme as she uses purely the natural forms colour. So then I started looking into straw and mud and how I could shape these into the accessories I designed, I then also tried thinking weather it will work and be intriguing enough.

I made this sample using plant pot liner cut and hot glue gunned together so that it creates a swirled effect like the cutting of trees in the formation of the trunk. The colour pallet also links to the natural form of wood and straw.
I then started working with a more solid piece of wood.

I then began to develop and out of my development, choose my favourite designs for my final lineup for this theme. I felt that this felt like a very good way to come up with designs as the photoshoot put the accessories more into perspective.

Project Three - Lamula Nassuna 

Re-designing A Well Tailored Suit

Today we got a new project brief by a designer. The project brief was to re-design one of her tailored suits. There was many way to go about this, but the suit had to be modernly acknowledged piece. First of all I started exploring though tailored suits by designers recommended in the project; I started to collect images and started creating a mood board. From my mood board I then starting taking interesting section and traced over them.

After finding interesting shapes, I started looking at different suit collars, and began drawing them out, I then started looking at fluidity in the collar. loose construction. Then I started drawing out suit jackets using the collars that I drew out previous and also incorporating my favourite sections of the garments from my mood board as inspiration.

When I was drawing out designs i incorporated different sections of interest, and my favourite was the flaps. I liked the idea of the fabric being folded over and for the lining of that to be a different colour. So one jacket in particular interested me, so I took this on to further development. To aid my project I decided to explore through the WGSN website for the newest upcoming fashion forecasting. From here I the upcoming colour trends.

Reference from WGSN Fashion Forecasting colour trends. I decided to go with the elemental pallet. I then started gathering pictures with similar colour schemes into my colour mood board and then following the pallet into my design work. With the final design I chose for the tailored jacket I started experimenting with different colour combinations from the elemental pallet.

Then I began to focus on the bottom, so I drew out a couple of designs of how I see fashion in the streets in modern society around the my area. I wanted to add a personal element of youth to my theme, so I started designing to my preference.

From my designs, I felt that the ones with the rolled up bottoms most related to my background and my youth group, So I decided to take that further and make them in to calf high trousers that rolled up to expose a beautiful vibrant lining.

I kept the same colour scheme for the bottoms, but played around with different designs, I ended up using the stripes for my final suit, this is because it added another element of complexity rather then just being plain bottoms. I ended up choosing the same two colours as the tailored jacket because I also wanted it to be obvious that it is a complete suit and not just separate pieces.

I really like the outcome for this project because it represents the kind of fashion that I like to look into, plus my fashion mentality. I enjoyed this project because it took me out of my comfort zone of crazy contemporary garments and into the line of commercial clothing that can also be altered to fit the modern scene.

So for my final development ideas, I chose 10 Garments that I personally thought was quite interesting. I then decided on the illusive pattern that I was going to use throughout my collection and then drew out my final line up.

I felt as though this collection was quite a smart conceptual collection, With the balance between the immature mind working with expectation VS reality.
